A Note From The Artistic Director:

"The course of true love never did run smooth."
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I.i.134

This year, Lovers & Madmen is proud to present four plays that show just how complex a course love can run:

In Fall Quarter, we have I Love You Because, a musical adaptation of Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice reset in modern-day New York City. I Love You Because shows us that the frustrations that people experience in their search for love haven’t changed in the two centuries since the novel’s first publication in 1813. It is a story about finding love when you least expect it, and of learning to love, because.

In Winter Quarter, we honor our Shakespearean roots with one of The Bard’s beautifully complex romances, Cymbeline. Here we learn how, if we aren’t careful, love can be destroyed by jealousy, and we learn the tremendous things people do to regain love once it has been lost. It is a story of love triumphing against all odds.

In Spring Quarter, L&M ventures to the Middle East for different form of classical theatre with Mary Zimmerman’s The Arabian Nights. A powerful king is betrayed by his lover and the world around him turns dark. His depression lasts until one woman arrives to tell him stories and to teach this heart-broken king how to love again. It is a story of the healing power of love.

Also in Spring Quarter, we have our annual Dillo Week Rock Show. This year, L&M is thrilled to present its first opera! Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro is a fast-paced comedy that breaks down marriage and love and exposes them for what they are: grand farce. Come watch a husband try to woo a mistress… who is actually his wife in disguise!  A perfect end to our season, it really is a story of both Love & Madness.
